Pape Cheikh Diop – Next in line at Lyon?

Olympique Lyonnais are a fantastically run team, although they don’t dominate the league like Paris St-Germain, they own the Youth Development scene.

Their current team is full of brilliant young talent, Houssem Aouar, Tanguy Ndombele, Lucas Tousart, Moussa Dembele, Caqueret, Gouiri, This list goes on for some time, so I will have to stop.

A player with the potential to make the next step up is Pape Cheikh Diop. The Frenchman has been slowly introduced to the squad this season, racking up a handful of appearances. It appears that Bruno Genesio is aware that his team will be disbanded this season, moving on to bigger and better things. N’dombele & Aouar are the most likely to be leaving.

If the above do end up exiting, it leaves quite the gap in central midfield, a gap which Pape Cheikh would be looking to fill. It’s the next step of his development & Genesio does admire the Box to Box midfielder. Very little has been seen of Pape Cheikh yet, but when he plays for Lyon he puts a good shift in.

He’s more likely to be an Ndombele replacement, as it suits his playing style, Aouar is more of a Deep lying playmaker who carries the ball forward at will. However, he will have lots of work to do, in order to get to N’dombele’s ability.

It seems that Pape rates his own ability, choosing to represent Spain as his national side. He denied Senegal, where he would probably already be in the senior team now. This shows that the Spaniard has the ambition of an elite sportsman, something crucial for his development.

Lyon paid £12 million for Pape Cheikh, beating Tottenham Hotspur to the signature. Pape stated that the reason he moved to Lyon instead as they are reknown for building young prospects into world class talents. He probably took a lower wage to ensure his development is enhanced. All credit to him!

After transferring from Celta Vigo, it looked as if he wasn’t destined to suceed in France. He completed just 9 minutes of action in Ligue 1 in 2017. The 2018/19 season was more successful, where he managed 23 appearances in all competitions, including a solid performance in the Champions League against Manchester City, where Lyon won 2-1.

Bruno Genesio has stated that he will hand Pape Cheikh more responsibility next season, with the expected departures. He’s definitely on our radar as we could be looking at their next future elite talent!
